I tried to achieve an effect of near-utter darkness in this render.

yeah, good job.
I love your work, I like this one, but you made better ones then this ;-)
But still... it's beautiful.

I should say, try another angle and give it a litle more light and it will make a great difference.

But since my thoughts are when you make something, and you like it, you shouldn't eddit it to mak it like the other loves it, that's not art. The real art is when you finish it when you like it.

So, this is a great piece of art ;-)
